It’s a dark day for game collectors as one of the last pillars of the gaming console industry has announced that they will no longer support the sale of physical hard copies of new video games.

Sony announced that beginning in 2028, new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will shift strictly to digital releases through the PlayStation Store and digital formats at retailers. This means that physical disc production will see its long run as Sony’s main consumer preference end. Sony first began developing only physical hard copies of games on the original PlayStation in 1994. Since then, the main PlayStation line has always mainly run off a disc format. With the introduction of the PlayStation 3 in 2006, the PlayStation Network and the ability to bypass a physical copy for a digital download was introduced into the ecosystem. The 20+ year run of physical hard copies of PlayStation games will now come to a close as the industry shifts to the digital age.

Sony says this transition will not impact games on disc format already released or slated to release prior to January 2028.
