Everyone loves a clean home but for those of us with pets that shed, kids, or other dependents and work, maintaining a clean home can be very challenging. For a while now I’ve been considering a robot vacuum to help us keep clean in our day-to-day but I had lots of questions: how hard would maintenance be, was it really worth it, and would it actually suck up all the dog hair? Lefant reached out to us recently inviting us to review their newest model, the M3 Max Robot Vacuum and Mop. I was absolutely thrilled to get to check this vacuum out and share my thoughts on it in a very busy household. Let’s take a closer look.

Parts and Pieces

The Lefant M3 Max looks unassuming and can sit in virtually any corner of your home. There’s a few components to the entire unit - the vacuum itself, the docking station that is hands-free, and the water tank for both clean and dirty water from the mop. The vacuum appears to be well built, sturdy enough to move and function on its own, and can withstand the not so gentle smacks from a toddler that plays with it everyday. The docking station is the largest part of the system but with the exception of some maintenance, it’s very hands off. There’s a 3.2L dustbag that Lefant advertises can last about 8 weeks, a 2.5L water tank and features like auto-cool drying with built-in detergent dispensing for effective mopping. I’ve done maintenance on the device and it’s all pretty straightforward– all guided through the Lefant app. There’s a brush head where you can remove hair and debris and a dust tank that’s easy enough to empty. It’s straightforward, requires just a few minutes, and easy to take apart and put back.

One of my concerns was the M3 Max not being able to effectively pick up dog hair. We have two medium-sized dogs that shed year round so I was skeptical about the M3 Max clogging or not collecting everything. I was wrong, but I also had to make sure that the setting to vacuum was on the highest level to truly pick up the smaller pieces of dog hair on our rug. The M3 Max also uses a V-shaped brush head that gathers hair without tangling, making it easier to remove when it comes to maintenance time. I was really impressed with how much hair came out of the vacuum and how easy it was to remove.

Effective Cleaning But…

During the first two weeks I opened up the M3 Max, I watched it clean almost every single time I started it. I was impressed at how effortlessly it moved and cleaned. The circular design of the side brushes keep the coverage fantastic. In some instances there was a small gap that it missed between furniture but due the 360° scanning using LiDAR, I felt the robot was able to pinpoint areas very well overall. Lefant also touts that the M3 Max can store multi-floor layouts for up to 3 level homes.

The robot unit is 3.8” tall and 11” wide, fitting comfortably in small places and crevices. It can move under larger furniture items like cabinets or buffet tables and uses Lefant’s Freemove Tech 3.0 to dodge larger items. I will say that this software was probably my biggest gripe with the product. The M3 Max cleans incredibly well but my robot kept getting stuck in various places and I would sometimes find it out of battery and abandoned near the toilet, under the rug, or accidentally losing a battle against a stray cable. It’s a little tricky, because the M3 Max didn’t get stuck every single time in the same place so even though I made sure the rug was flat or moved the stray cable, it would then get stuck in other areas of the house. I will add that I feel as though my home was the ultimate obstacle test for the M3 Max as well, with plenty of nooks and barriers that it had to navigate around so to a certain extent, I’m also not surprised it struggled a little with all the various items in my home. Nevertheless, I hope Lefant continues to improve on this in future iterations.

In terms of suction, the M3 Max features a 20,000 Pa ultra strong suction. It was definitely strong. On the highest setting, when it wasn’t getting stuck by obstacles I was impressed with how well it sucked up human hair, dog hair, and all the extra dirt and debris in our home. Keep in mind that the unit does make more noise the stronger level the suction is on. Even in our two-story home, I was able to hear the unit running downstairs while I was upstairs on the other side of the house.

Plenty of Battery and Great Connectivity

I also appreciated the 5,200 mAh battery life of the M3 Max. Lefant advertises up to 220 minutes of maximum runtime which I found plenty for a single floor at maximum strength. The M3 Max can clean up to just under 2,400 square feet which is great for single family homes. As for connectivity, it’s absolutely seamless. The unit supports Bluetooth 5.0 and dual-band WiFi. I had zero issues pairing the vacuum at setup to my device or the internet.

Speaking of connectivity, the Lefant app was also very easy to use. It includes at a glance views like battery life, what mode it’s in, and easy ways to start cleaning. You can also customize a lot in this app as well including specialized modes for deep cleaning. There’s boosted suction options, carpet avoidance or no-mop zones. It’s very simple to get cleaning started and I appreciate how customizable you can make the M3 Max with just the touch of a few buttons. For those who prefer their vacuum to run at a certain time, you can also set scheduled cleanings as well.

Final Thoughts

Overall, The Lefant M3 Max is a great value for everything it offers. The self-cleaning mode and easy connectivity makes it easy to integrate into any home and requires little maintenance. However, the obstacle avoidance can definitely use more work and I felt that my time with the M3 Max was tainted because of this and the constant interference it struggled with. Nevertheless, when the M3 Max cleans, it cleans very well. Ideally your home has fewer obstacles than mine and more open space for it to run its way through. For the price point of $439, I think this robot vacuum is competitive for everything it offers and really does function as a cleaning assistant in my home.
