CES 2024: Volkswagen To Utilize ChatGPT In Infotainment Overhaul

This year at CES 2024, Volkswagen debut its newest artificial-intelligence-based, chatbot powered by ChatGPT, infotainment system that seamlessly integrates into its IDA voice assistant. Now including AI technology and integrated ChatGPT, the German car maker is betting big on these advancements to drive their infotainment experience going forward. Along with a strong focus on AI for this calendar year, Volkswagen also showcased its upcoming new addition to their ID EV lineup, the all-electric ID.7. Volkswagen seems committed to enhancing and integrating AI technology into upcoming vehicles to improve the user experience and this is a glimpse of what is to come for future models.

It will be available on models that are on the MEB and the MQB evo moving forward, such as the ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the upcoming Tiguan, Passat, and Golf.

The new ChatGPT powered infotainment

The newest AI technology is provided by Cerence Chat Pro from Volkswagen technology partner, Cerence Inc., which is the foundation of this all new technology. It offers a unique approach to intelligent, automotive-grade ChatGPT integration. The upcoming vehicles from Volkswagen will be the first volume manufacturer to offer AI technology and ChatGPT as a standard feature starting from the second quarter of 2024.

It will be available on models that are on the MEB and the MQB evo moving forward, such as the ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the upcoming Tiguan, Passat, and Golf. Volkswagen promises this new integration of ChatGPT to offer unparalleled capabilities compared to previous voice assistant controls. The new IDA voice assistant allows drivers and passengers to use their voices to control the navigation, HVAC system, as well as answering general questions about anything. Essentially, any function that is available from the screen is able to be controlled by voice, purely hands-free. The AI technology continuously improves the user experience over time and will eventually push the boundaries beyond its initial capabilities.

The integration of this AI technology along with ChatGPT is seamless in the vehicles. It is not necessary to create an account or install an app as it is always ready to be activated once the driver or passengers enter the vehicle. Users simply say “Hello IDA” or the driver can press a button on the steering wheel.

Cerence Chat Pro designed the system so that any voice inputs into the IDA voice assistant and subsequent responses are immediately deleted to ensure the highest possible level of privacy and security. The main priorities are security and seamless integration of IDA and the vehicles’ functions to enhance driver and passenger experience.

Volkswagen seems to want to assure customers that it is committed to always improving their user experience, which is why this new feature will be included as standard. This increases the added value of the vehicle and allows more people to have access to the new infotainment technology.
