Nitetronic Z6 Smart Anti-Snoring Pillow Review

Can It Make You Snore Less?

Sleep is arguably one of the most important things you can do for your body. It’s a period of rest, recovery and more. But for those who snore, the night can be disruptive for you or anyone you share a room with. That’s where the Nitetronic Z6 Smart Anti-Snore Pillow comes in. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from an anti-snore pillow but after more than a month now, this pillow has grown on me quite a bit. Let’s take a closer look.

How Does It Work?

This was the first smart pillow I ever tried and I was curious to know how it worked and how it would reduce snoring. The pillow features a memory foam core with cotton cover. It looks and is shaped like a standard pillow with the exception of the wiring connected to it that powers an internal airbag based on when snoring is detected via MEMS sensor.

The pillow can sense what position your head is in and will inflate gently when it detects snoring, allowing you to turn your head to the side and allowing the user’s airways to be cleared so they can breathe more easily. It’s a simple enough intervention for those who may be mild snorers without other non-central nervous system medical conditions. Nitetronic touts the Z6 as being clinically verified and a non-invasive option to other anti-snore products. There’s also a certain level of precision the Z6 can achieve, thanks to its 6 inflatable airbags located throughout the pillow. This way, regardless of what position your head is in, there’s space for adjustment.

On first impression, I was nervous wondering how the pillow would inflate and how comfortable it would be. We’re no stranger to inflatable sleep products like the ReST bed, but resting your head directly on something inflating and deflating can feel, well… odd.

Nevertheless, I was impressed with how quiet and subtle the Z6 performed. Only in the absolute quiet when I was concentrating did I hear the airbags inflating and as someone who is pretty sensitive, I barely noticed the movement. I was able to comfortably sleep and let the sensors perform on their own accord entirely.

As for comfort, it took a few days for me to grow accustomed to the memory foam core. While the height of the pillow is adjustable between 9 cm to 13 cm, it’s pretty obvious that the internal material to the Z6 feels different than standard normal down pillows. That paired with the weight does require an adoption period but I did not find myself having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep because of it. It just feels different and less fluffy than other pillows I’ve used previously. Do note that because the pillow features inflatable airbags, the pillow must be connected via pump and plug to work effectively. The pump itself sits on the floor underneath my bed, but you can adjust its detection sensitivity and intervention intensity through five levels from the touch of a few buttons. I played around with these settings and found that level 4 for both was a happy medium for me without too much interference. A pillowcase is also included with the Z6, but due to the large cable that is required to keep it connected, it does slip out of the pillowcase awkwardly at times.

The Anti-Snore App

What makes the Z6 even smarter is its companion Nitetronic app. While the app itself ran smoothly for me on iOS, the reports left much to be desired. Logging into the app, you can view your weekly summary at a glance and how much you snored in the past 7 days. The app is also where you can confirm connectivity to your pillow and track recent sleep and intervention time. Within the app, you can also manage how sensitive you want the pillow to be.

In theory, this is all great information and conveniently all tucked into a single place that you can manage digitally. But the daily reports honestly didn’t tell me too much. There’s a snoring and intervention performance rating that you see each day that shows how effective the pillow was at intervening with snoring. It always hovered somewhere around 80% for me consistently. There’s also a chart that shows how many minutes it detected snoring at different volumes. I’m not sure how these volumes are defined, but it seemed mostly accurate to me. I’m not a very heavy snorer but my sleep patterns have been off since having a baby.

The last visual in the daily report is an intervention improvement. There’s a comparison bar chart that shows if the pillow’s intervention helped the user to snore less. In many scenarios it did appear to effectively limit my snoring. That being said, I wish there was more functionality out of the app. I would love to see more sleep tracking capabilities - like time slept, REM cycles, and overall sleep score quality. Combining the sleep features of a smart ring or watch with this pillow would give a well-rounded approach to overall sleep quality, which I think Nitetronic missed out on with this product. Sure it’s great to see that the pillow is 80% effective in doing its job, but there would be more use in seeing holistic stats.

Is It Worth It?

The Z6 did as it was advertised for me and did help me snore less. That being said, it retails for about $550 USD and requires an outlet for it to be plugged into. Compared to other anti-snore products, it’s less intrusive and much more comfortable, but there’s also quite a bit of room for improvement. I wish there were more features to give users a holistic view on sleep rather than just snoring stats in an app. Considering a higher end pillow may cost close to about $200, you’re looking at nearly tripling that in hopes of a more quiet night of rest. If snoring really is a big issue for you, this may very well be an option to try but I also do hope that Nitetronic continues to add new features to the pillow in the future.
